KUED Advanced Screening of National Parks Troubled Edens

Join KUED and REI for an advanced screening of the latest film by KUED producer John Howe, National Parks Troubled Edens.

Dubbed “America’s best idea,’ they encompass 84 million acres of diverse landscape from the Everglades to glaciers to redwood forests.

But in the 21st Century, America’s national parks face unique challenges.

Are they being “loved to death?” Can they sustain their fragile ecosystems?

The documentary examines the future of America’s national parks, including Utah’s five national parks, often referred to as “Utah’s Crown Jewels.” The documentary is the final film in KUED’s Year of the Parks trilogy celebrating the centennial of the National Park Service.

A panel discussion with filmmaker John Howe will follow the film.

Refreshments will be provided.

Cuba: Complexity, Community, and Change Information Session

Join us to learn about the Cuba: Complexity, Community and Change program for Fall Break 2017. The program examines the complex intersection of the past and present in relation to current political, economic, social, and environmental changes in Cuba. Despite the recent changes in diplomatic relations with the U.S, there remain many misconceptions regarding both the internal and external dynamics of Cuba. Through in-class and in-country activities we will analyze various historical and contemporary perspectives regarding Cuba and the Cuban Revolution. Special emphasis will be given to grassroots changes occurring at the community level through various old and new social actors. The course is designed to give student participants a unique and interdisciplinary introduction to Cuba’s history, political system, socio-economic conditions and composition, and environmental policies.
